Food & Nutrition Benefits

CalFresh stretches your food budget

CalFresh gives you monthly benefits on an ATM-style plastic card, called an Electronic Benefit Transfer or EBT card, that you can use to purchase food.

The CalFresh card can be used instead of money for food at grocery stores and many local farmers markets. The benefits help you afford to buy the groceries you need to be healthy.

Known as CalFresh in California, this food and nutrition program is part of a federal government program, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

As of April 2020, CalFresh recipients can now use their EBT cards to purchase groceries online at Amazon.*

You can order food online that you would normally buy with your EBT card in the store. Availability of fresh items may be limited, however you may order non-perishable food. When you order, select Amazon home delivery (delivery may take longer than usual). CalFresh Food benefits cannot be used to cover the cost of delivery, though Amazon offers free delivery on orders over $35. EBT Card holders are eligible for a reduced cost Prime Membership, which eliminates the delivery fee on most items and grants access to other Prime benefits.

For more information, please visit EBT Online at www.cdss.ca.gov/ebtonline.

*Walmart online purchasing and delivery are unavailable in Sonoma County.

Economic Assistance Lobby Closed — Options for Services

The County of Sonoma has transitioned to a temporary and precautionary suspension of non-essential operations until May 3, 2020, in an effort to protect employees and the community by limiting person-to-person contact to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

While most of the Human Services’ offices are temporarily closed, we will continue to provide essential services, including emergency services for child welfare, adult protective services, IHSS, CalWORKs, Medi-Cal, CalFresh, and General Assistance.

Read the questions and answers about how public benefits are affected on the Human Services Department home page first. For additional information, please email info@schsd.org or call 707-565-5800. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work together to keep our communities safe.

FOOD - Sonoma County

Sonoma County free food pantries.

Residents of Sonoma County California that need help feeding their families can turn to local food pantries. Many of them are non-profits or charities and offer the low income and less fortunate with free items, such as boxes of food, groceries, and hot meals. Or families can contact a center for information or referrals to programs such as CalFresh food stamps or USDA programs.

The hours of the centers vary as does exactly what may be passed out. It is usually recommended to call in advance. However, not only can an approved client maybe get a free bag of groceries, but some of the non-profits can help in other ways as well, such as offering clothing or holiday meals. Other resources such as Emergency Food Assistance Program (EFAP), Meals on Wheels for seniors, government benefit applications and other resources are available.

Arts and Culture Leaders of Color Emergency Fund – The Arts and Culture Leaders of Color Emergency Fund is intended to help those pursuing careers as artists or arts administrators whose income has been directly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This fund is for those who self-identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color).

Behind the Scenes Grant – Behind the Scenes will accept applications from anyone who has been hospitalized with Covid-19 and is in financial need. You may be eligible for a grant if you currently reside in the United States or Canada and have earned your living for at least five years in the entertainment technology industry. This means that your major source of income is from your work in this industry, which includes being directly involved with production: behind the scenes in any type of performance venue, or behind the camera, or on the road. It also includes working companies who are directly involved in supplying entertainment technology products and services such as dealers, manufacturers, production companies, consultants, and design firms. Performing artists are not eligible.

Crew Nation Fund – Supporting live music crews who have been directly impacted as shows are put on pause due to COVID-19. Applications are now open for anyone who has been financially impacted from shows originally scheduled to take place in March or April 2020. The deadline to submit an application is Friday, May 1st. International applications accepted.

The fund will distribute unrestricted grants of up to $2000 to support personal financial needs during the COVID19 pandemic to freelancers who have experienced hardship from loss of income or opportunity as a result of the pandemic. Applications currently closed; will reopen in May.

Freelancers Union Freelancers Relief Fund – Freelancers Relief Fund will offer financial assistance of up to $1,000 per freelance household to cover lost income and essential expenses not covered by government relief programs, including food/food supplies; utility payments; cash assistance to cover income loss.

UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS FOR INDEPENDENT DESIGNERS

The stimulus package will provide an additional $600 a week to those who qualify for unemployment or for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance benefits for up to four months. (Unemployment benefits are typically about half your average weekly salary.)

What is Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, exactly? It’s a provision that expands the benefit to include those who are not typically eligible to receive unemployment but who have not been able to work due to the coronavirus, including independent contractors or those with a limited work history or who are self-employed—freelance designers, that means you. It can also provide 13 additional weeks of unemployment benefits on top of the average 26 weeks. The Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program runs through December 31, 2020. So if your work dries up between now and then, you might be eligible to file for unemployment. Keep in mind, however, that you must first apply for regular unemployment insurance and be denied to be eligible for PUA, according to this list of COVID-19 resources for freelancers, artists, and gig workers based in New York.

RENT ASSISTANCE

Sonoma County rent assistance programs. https://www.needhelppayingbills.com/html/sonoma_county_rental_assistanc.html

(includes referrals to House help throughout county)

Non-profits assist with rental expenses for income qualified Sonoma County residents. Several agencies can help families facing an eviction apply for financial aid, which may come in the form of a grant. The funds are intended to pay a portion of overdue rent, however there may also be assistance for other expenses such as security deposits and other housing related costs.

The most common name of the programs in Sonoma County include homeless prevention or rapid rehousing. However the agencies that do offer some form of rent assistance may also call their programs by other names. Any type of funding paid out is usually combined with other support, such as help in locating permanent housing as well free legal aid in entering a payment plan on back rent and otherwise preventing an eviction.
